Gifted Ones: Men and women born with unusual talents and abilities (healing, telepathy, shape shifting, telekinesis, teleportation, etc.) as a result of far more complex DNA than that of ordinary humans.
Immortals (Immortal Guardians): Gifted ones who have been infected with a rare symbiotic virus that first conquers, then replaces their immune system, lending them incredible strength, speed and longevity. Unfortunately, it also leaves them vulnerable to sunlight and in need of regular infusions of blood.
Vampires: Ordinary human men and women who have been infected with the same rare symbiotic virus that infects immortals. Because they lack the advanced DNA of gifted ones (which mutates the virus into something less corrosive), they suffer brain damage from the virus's continuous assault and rapidly descend into madness.
The Network: A network of humans amassed over the centuries to aid the Immortal Guardians. The employees range from Seconds (personal assistants and guards of individual immortals) to cleaners (those who 'clean up' the messes immortals sometimes leave behind when hunting vampires) to doctors and scientists who are searching for a cure for the virus or at least some way to prevent the brain damage that occurs in vampires.
Sarah Bingham: A music theory professor at UNC Chapel Hill. The spring semester has ended and her only desire is rest and relaxation . . . until she finds Roland staked to the ground, being tortured by two others, in the meadow behind her home and uses her trusty shovel to liberate him, becoming the target of a vicious vampire army.
Roland Warbrook: A nine-hundred-and-thirty-six-year-old immortal born with the ability to heal with his hands. Betrayed one too many times in the past by those he loved the most, he now distances himself from relationships of any kind and trusts no one . . . until Sarah charges into his life.
Bastien (Sebastien Newcombe): Roland's new nemesis. He has done what was previously considered impossible raised a vampire army large enough to pose a serious threat to the Immortal Guardians and intends to eradicate them one victim at a time while pursuing a personal vendetta against Roland.
Marcus Grayden: An immortal who disregards Roland's reclusive disposition and calls him friend. He recently lost the woman he has loved for eight centuries and, consumed with grief, is skating the edge as he aids Roland in battling Sebastien and his vicious army.
Seth: The eldest and most powerful Immortal Guardian . He possesses all of the paranormal abilities the others boast combined and then some. As their self-proclaimed leader, he considers it his responsibility to seek out all newly transformed immortals, ease their transition into their new life, train them, guide them, give them a new purpose and, if necessary, punish them should they stray from the boundaries he sets for them.
David: The second eldest and most powerful Immortal Guardian . Like Seth, he considers all Immortals and their Seconds family and opens his homes to them, aiding them in any way he can and putting their safety and happiness above his own.
Amiriska (Ami): A mysterious woman of unknown origins Seth and David rescue from a facility heavily guarded by either the military or mercenaries. When Marcus's behavior becomes erratic, Seth assigns Ami to serve as Marcus's Second.
Chris Reordon: Head of the network of humans and gifted ones who aid Immortal Guardians. He takes his responsibilities very seriously and can be quite ruthless while protecting immortals and ensuring their safety.
Dr. Melanie Lipton: A doctor with the human network, who works hands-on with vampires, searching for a cure for the virus or at least some way to prevent the madness it causes in humans who are infected with it. She sees in Bastien what others can't and soon becomes his staunchest defender.
Zach: A mysterious winged figure who boasts nearly as much power as Seth.
Richart d'Alençon: A French immortal who can teleport. He dares to do what few other immortals have tried and attempts to carry on a traditional courtship with a mortal woman.
Jenna McBride: A single mother, struggling to put her son through college, she worries Richart is too good to be true and may be hiding something from her.
Sheldon: Richart's Second, or human guard. Young and notoriously green, he is still learning the ropes and prone to getting into trouble.
Étienne d'Alençon: Richart's twin. Étienne has always adored strong women, so when he sees Krysta a mortal woman fearlessly take on four vampires on her own, he is instantly captivated.
Krysta Linz: Once the victim of a vicious vampire attack, she has dedicated her life to slaying every blood-sucking vampire she can find.
“Beautiful, brave and possessed of violent tendencies. I like her.”
“I'm not antisocial. I just want to be left alone.”
“I may be small, but I can put away a lot of food.”
“What -- are you high? You just told me my hair is beautiful.”
“Speaking of bloodbaths, what happened at the meeting?”
“You stabbed me in the ass?”
“What did you think I would do? Ask her if I could braid her hair
after we gave each other facials and painted our toenails?”
“You make me burn. And I've been cold for so long.”
“I can love Ami and kick ass at the same time. I'm multifunctional.”
“How is kicking my ass going to help?” Marcus grouched.
Seth shrugged. “Makes me feel better.”
“Dab, Abi. How cad you turd me od whed my face feels like it just exploded?”
Seth exchanged a resigned stare with David. “What has gotten into them tonight?”
David shrugged. “Too much sugar?”
“Are you sure I can't talk you into leaving this old sod and
running away with me? I do so love strong women.
“I'll punch you if I have to.”
“Over eight centuries of living and I still haven't learned
a bloody thing. I still want what I can't have.”
“I've had to tiptoe around you for almost a decade.
Now that I'm free to irritate you at will,
I find it exceedingly entertaining.”
“I can't leave you children alone for five minutes!”
“All right. All right. Settle Down. We're all glad Sarah stabbed Bastien in the ass.”
“Boy, do not make me chase you"”
“If you tell me you have two gifts and one of the is X-ray vision, I'm going to have to hurt you.”
“I'm not even going to ask.”
“Dude, I say go for it,” Sheldon said as he strolled down the hall toward them, “Dr. Lipton is smokin' hot and you're . . . you."
A teasing smile curved her lips. “So you stare at my breasts?”
“Yes,” he said, returning her smile, and shook his head in bafflement. “And for some reason, admitting that makes me feel like a naughty school boy caught peeking up his teacher’s skirt.”
Melanie and Bastien
“Wow. You really have a knack for making friends with antisocial bastards, don't you?”
“Is the going to get weird? Like kinky weird?”
“It's kind of hard to be afraid of a vampire who apologizes for using harsh language in front of a lady.”
“Dude, vampires threaten to feed me my own entrails all the time. You're going to have to come up with something better than that.”
“No touching,” he admonished himself. At least no touching that might lead to more touching”
“Really? You're going to put that image in my head?”
“Great. There goes our security deposit.”
“Sweetie, I'm not a flowers and chocolates kind of gal,” she said, leaning into him. “Well, maybe the chocolate.”
“I was going to say.”
Krysta and Étienne
“You're a strong, beautiful woman who knows her way around a blade. I find that” he drew in a deep breath as his eyes traveled over her with a heat that scorched her “incredibly appealing.”
“What makes you think you'll see him again?”
“Oh, I'll see him again. He left me alive for a reason. And I'm going to kick his ass until he tells me what it is.”
Sean and Krysta
“There is no reason to feel embarrassed, Krysta.”
“Easy for you to say! You weren’t caught mentally checking out my package!”
Krysta and Étienne
Krysta looked at her watch. “We still have a few hours of hunting left and nothing much is happening. You want to make out a little?”
He laughed in surprised delight. “You're a saucy wench, aren't you?”
“Hey, when I want something, I go for it.”
